Focus on Mathematics and Numeracy Standards Implementation

The notion of aligning instruction, assessment, and accountability systems to standards is relatively new to adult basic education, yet adult-focused standards have become a central concern in recent years. The U.S. Department of Educations Office of Vocational and Adult  Education (OVAE), the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), and several states have created standards to guide adult basic education instructional programs. Moreover, in a field that has put a great emphasis on literacy and reading skills for adults, mathematics and numeracy standards are a component of all recent standards initiatives. TIAN’S professional development program will help teachers engage with standards-based instructional practice and bring the vision of their state-endorsed mathematics standards to life in their classrooms. Thus, standards are the launching point for this initiative.

State Standards in Field Test States

The field test teachers at TIAN Institutes were asked how they saw the "core concepts" of their state's standards come alive for students in the classroom when working with lessons about data and graphs and algebra. Here are the stories they had to tell.

Massachusetts and Ohio teachers at the second TIAN Institute describe how they saw the "Core Concepts" come alive for students when working with lessons about data and graphs.
